Under 14's Friendly

16th May 2012

The under 14 team played Cambridgeshire in a friendly on Sunday 13th May

The Under 14's played a friendly against Cambridge at The Bedfordshire Golf Club on Sunday 13th May.  The course was in excellent condition and it was a pleasure to have sunshine for most of the day after all the rain of late. As is often the case on this course the wind was blowing making some of the holes very long, however the standard of golf was excellent and we came away with a 9-1 win.  I am very please and encouraged with the quality of the Under 14's squad who are gaining in confidence with each match.

BSGA run 2 successful events.

5th May 2012

The Bedfordshire Schools Golf Association run a fund raising day and Handicap Championship.

The BSGA had a highly successful fund raising day at Woburn recently on a rare dry day! Charlie O'Brien's family Charity Day raised a figure of approximately £3,700 which is effectively worth a 3-5 year sponsorship.

It was great to see so many ex schools players supporting us at Woburn, both playing, organising and bidding in an auction that raised £2,400 for 10 items.  Holly Aitchison, on the European Ladies Tour, came back to raise £400 with a 'Man or Mouse' Par 3 Challenge on the 3rd of the Dukes course.

The Handicap Championship was held on 2nd May at John O'Gaunt on the Carthagena course and on another dry day!!  We had a record entry of 90 youngsters and the age profile was also encouraging as 65 were 15 or under.  This is a significant shift from several years ago when it was the reverse with a majority of older players competing. It is also a reflection of the changes in golfing opportunities in schools and the academy programmes that have been set up outside as well. Next year we will be responding to the increased interest by holding extra events with North and South Qualifiers added to the programme before a final event.

The support from the host club was outstanding again, with the results being processed in record time and the presentation on schedule at 4-30 pm.  Similarly the support from Bedfordshire County Golf Union members was ever present and really helpful.

The full results can be viewed here.

County Foursomes Cancelled

2nd May 2012

This weekends County Foursomes Championship is cancelled.

It is with great regret that we have made the decision to cancel this Sunday's County Foursomes Championships. The Beadlow Manor course has experienced prolonged, heavy rainfall which has led to it being closed and the greenstaff have been unable to get onto the course to prepare it properly. With further rain forecast for the area the situation is not likely to improve sufficiently so it was felt best that an early decision be made to cancel.

Clubs and competitors will be seperately notified and entry fees refunded as soon as possible.

JR's California Swing

30th April 2012

Bedfordshire youngster to play in Junior World Championships.

JR Ellis, a junior member at Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club, has qualified for the Callaway Junior World Championship in San Diego, California this July.

This is a terrific achievement as JR was just 10 years old in March.  We all wish him well at the Championship and look forward to a report on how it goes.

It's BOOM time!
